Savage Society presents THE WORDS OF OUR CHIEFS September 3, 2017

Savage Society is pleased to present the The Words of Our Chiefs, a drama with music, at the Lytton River Festival in Lytton, British Columbia on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.

The Words of Our Chiefs is a passionate retelling of The Wilfred Laurier Memorial, a 107-year-old document petitioning Prime Minister Wilfred Laurier by the Allied Chiefs of the Interior Tribes of British Columbia, designed to recognize and support aboriginal rights. This powerful document outlines the Aboriginal experience and details their grievances, their history in the BC interior since first contact.

Signed by the Secwepemc, Syilx and Nlaka'pamux peoples at Spences Bridge, British Columbia in 1910, the ideas and emotions expressed in this historical document remain relevant to the First Nations experience today and the Savage Society Production of The Words of Our Chiefs is a particularly fitting presentation to revisit on the 150th Anniversary of Canada’s Confederation.

This event is Savage Society’s third production in three years created with community members of Lytton and the Nlaka’pamux Nation. Performers and contributing artists in The Words of Our Chiefs include Kevin Loring, Aaron Wells, Kim Harvey, Ron Dean Harris, Sandy Scofield and N’laka’pamux community members. This project is made possible by the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council. Special thanks to Lytton First Nation and N’laka’pamux Tribal Council, The Village of Lytton, and the Lytton & District Chamber of Commerce.
